A healthy Oreo copycat recipe, anyone? Homemade Gluten-Free + Vegan Oreo Cookies that are top 8 allergy-free, sugar-free, and just like the classic crunchy chocolate and cream sandwich cookies you loved! A fun and easy dessert or snack you can feel good about serving up!
A current favorite, nostalgic for others, untouchable to many. Oreo cookies are vegan, but they're not gluten-free. Gluten-free Oreo copycats are not vegan and allergy-free. So where does that leave us? The ones who need Oreos totally free-from? Why not make them a bit healthier too? No sugar bombs or processed cookie sandwiches allowed! I hear, yea, and I also have a rather delicious solution!
Now, there's lots of homemade Oreo recipes out there, but many are trying to be trendy with terms like Raw ("Rawios") or have a soft cookie, etc. I set out to make these like REAL Oreos. Crunchy chocolate cookie and sweet delicious cream center. These cookies were a labor of love to get just right, but I would not be deterred. We all need some free-from Oreos in our life....right? So what was the winning cookie ingredient combo, you ask?
How do you make a crunchy chocolate Oreo cookie?
Simply put, you only need FIVE ingredients for the cookie part! Our trusty gluten-free 1 to 1 baking flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 stick of Melt (vegan and soy-free butter), some Swerveerythritol (sugar-free sugar), and a touch of pure vanilla extract!
How do you make a perfect Oreo cream?
Ah, my dairy-free friends! We will be making a batch of this delicious vegan vanilla buttercream frosting! Again, you really just need some Melt and powdered erythritol here if you don't even want to look at the recipe.
And the process to make these Oreo cookies? It's not difficult...right?
You'll just be mixing up the cookie dough, and rolling it out! Cut-out cookies anyone? I used a 2-inch round cookie cutter and make 20 cookies for a total of 10 gluten-free vegan Oreos. Bake the cookies for about 12-15 minutes, then let them cool (completely!) While that's happening you just need to whip up your batch of buttercream for stuffing (or, in Oreo terms "stufing") those delicious crunchy chocolate cookies!
The other benefit of making your own healthier and free-from Oreos is that you can STUFF them with cream! My mom would never buy the "original" Oreos. She would only ever buy the Double Stuf Oreo cookies. If they weren't double stuf, you might as well just be paying for crunchy chocolate cookies (cream scrooges!). My mom knows (knew) her sweets and treats and never failed filling our school lunchboxes with the best 😉
What's the easiest way to fill these gluten-free vegan Oreo cookies?
If you happen to have this nifty cupcake injector/decorator, you've got it easy! If not, just use a typical pastry bag with a simple circle tip or use a plastic bag by filling the bag with the cream and snipping one corner of the plastic bag to make a makeshift pastry bag!

- 1 Batch of Vegan Sugar-Free Vanilla Buttercream
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- In a large mixing bowl, sift the flour and cocoa powder together.
- Then add the sweetener, softened butter, and vanilla. Mix well to form a soft cookie dough.
- Roll the cookie dough out on parchment paper or a Silpat to about ¼ inch thickness.
- Use a 2-inch round cookie cutter to cut out 20 cookies (re-roll dough as needed).
- Transfer the parchment or Silpat to a baking sheet and bake the cut-out cookies in the oven for 12-15 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and allow them to cool completely before making the sandwiches.
- Once the cookies have cooled, use a pastry bag or cream injector to squeeze about 1 ½ teaspoons of prepared buttercream on the bottom side of one cookie. Take another cookie and press the bottom gently on to the exposed cream to form an Oreo sandwich.
- Repeat for the rest of the cookies to make a total of 10 Oreos.
