Confession

The confession is said privately. The audio file begins after confession.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

A brief silence is kept

Grant your faithful people, merciful Lord, pardon and peace; that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Venite
Psalm 95:1-7; 96:9,13

O come, let us sing to the Lord;*
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving*
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God,*
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth,*
and the heights of the hills are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,*
and his hands have molded the dry land.

O come, let us worship and bow down,*
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God,*
and we are the people of his pasture
and the sheep of his hand.
Today, if you hear his voice,*
do not harden your heart as in the rebellion.

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness;*
let the whole earth stand in awe of him.
For he comes, for he comes to judge the earth*
and with righteousness to judge the world
and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Psalter

The appointed Psalm is read together

Psalm 119:1-24

Aleph

Blessed are they whose way is blameless,*

who walk in the law of the LORD.

Blessed are they who keep his testimonies,*

who seek him with their whole heart,

who also do no unrighteousness,*

but always walk in his ways.

You have laid down your precepts,*

that we should keep them diligently.

Oh, that my ways may be steadfast*

in keeping your decrees.

Then I shall not be put to shame,*

when I consider all your commandments.

I will praise you with an upright heart,*

when I have learned your righteous rules.

I will keep your decrees;*

do not utterly forsake me.

Beth

How can a young man keep his way pure?*

By guarding it according to your word.

With my whole heart I seek you;*

oh let me not wander from your commandments.

Your word I have hidden in my heart,*

that I might not sin against you.

Blessed are you, O LORD;*

teach me your decrees.

With my lips I have declared*

all the judgments of your mouth.

I delight in the way of your statutes*

as much as in all manner of riches.

I will meditate on your precepts*

and fix my eyes on your ways.

I will delight myself in your statutes;*

I will not forget your word.

Gimel

Deal bountifully with your servant,*

that I may live and keep your word.

Open my eyes, that I may see*

the wondrous things in your law.

I am a sojourner on the earth;*

do not hide your commandments from me.

My soul is consumed at all times*

with longing for your ordinances.

You rebuke the insolent,*

the accursed ones, who stray from your commandments.

Remove from me scorn and contempt,*

for I have kept your testimonies.

Though princes sit and plot against me,*

your servant will meditate on your decrees.

Indeed, your statutes are my delight;*

they are my counselors.

After the Psalm, the Officiant begins

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Lessons

A reading of the appointed lessons

Ezra 1

1In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also put it in writing:

2“Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. 3Whoever is among you of all his people, may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and rebuild the house of the LORD, the God of Israel—he is the God who is in Jerusalem. 4And let each survivor, in whatever place he sojourns, be assisted by the men of his place with silver and gold, with goods and with beasts, besides freewill offerings for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.”

5Then rose up the heads of the fathers’ houses of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and the Levites, everyone whose spirit God had stirred to go up to rebuild the house of the LORD that is in Jerusalem. 6And all who were about them aided them with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, with beasts, and with costly wares, besides all that was freely offered. 7Cyrus the king also brought out the vessels of the house of the LORD that Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem and placed in the house of his gods. 8Cyrus king of Persia brought these out in the charge of Mithredath the treasurer, who counted them out to Sheshbazzar the prince of Judah. 9And this was the number of them: 30 basins of gold, 1,000 basins of silver, 29 censers, 1030 bowls of gold, 410 bowls of silver, and 1,000 other vessels; 11all the vessels of gold and of silver were 5,400. All these did Sheshbazzar bring up, when the exiles were brought up from Babylonia to Jerusalem.

Canticle

The Song of Zechariah
Benedictus Dominus Deus
Luke 1: 68-79

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;*
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior,*
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his holy prophets he promised of old,
that he would save us from our enemies,*
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers*
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham,*
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
Free to worship him without fear,*
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,*
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
To give his people knowledge of salvation*
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God*
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,*
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;*
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

Titus 2:11–3:15

11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

15Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

3Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, 2to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. 3For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. 4But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 8The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people. 9But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. 10As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, 11knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.

12When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. 13Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. 14And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.

15All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who love us in the faith.

Grace be with you all.

A brief silence is kept after the reading.

The Creed

I believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father,
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
I acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

I look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers
OThe Lord be with you
AAnd with your spirit.
OLet us pray.
OLord, have mercy
AChrist, have mercy
Lord, have mercy
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
OGod of all creation, full of love and abounding in mercy;
AMay the whole earth be filled with your glory.
OLord, bless and guide all ministers of your church;
AClothe them in righteousness and grant them wisdom.
ODirect the leaders of our nation;
AThat they may act in accordance with your kingdom.
OEnlarge our own hearts, O Lord,
ATo love the things that you love
OMay we proclaim your light
AIn every place where there is darkness.
OMay we proclaim your Holy Name
AIn every aspect of our lives.
OCreate in us clean hearts, O God;
AAnd renew a right spirit within us.
OGrant us your peace;
AFor only in you can we live in safety.
OWe pray for those in sickness, grief, persecution, bondage, fear, or loneliness.
ALord, have mercy.
OLet us offer our own prayers.
(a brief pause to silently offer our own prayers)
Suffrages from The Trinity Mission Daily Prayers for Individuals & Families
Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before you for all members of your holy Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
OLet us bless the Lord.
AThanks be to God.
OThe grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.
